Excellence!

Excellence!
by Danny Tariman

“Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” (1Cor 10:31)

It was one of the most poignant witnessing for the Lord: offering at the altar simple acts of service done in excellence.

The family was asked to be the Mass offerors for a coming Sunday. They were so happy to have been called to offer in the Mass, although they were very new in the parish.

They prepared a basket with various kinds of bread, arranged beautifully in a rattan-woven basket. In another native basket were fruits of different variety, carefully placed and garnished.

When they walked to the altar, the kids held the baskets in “offering” posture, walked in cadence with the parents who carried the usual chalice and wine. Truly excellence was present!

In another event, this family was called to change the altar cloth during Easter Vigil Mass.

Days before the Easter, they rehearsed changing a table cloth using their dining table. They made sure that they will perfectly place the cloth in 5 seconds flat. They tried several times until they made it really good.

In the morning of Saturday, while the mother made sure their best clothes to be worn are well-pressed, the father cleaned and shined their shoes. They left nothing unprepared for the service.

At the Easter Vigil Mass, the execution of the changing of altar cloth was so perfect.

Simple services. Done in excellence. Made for the glory of God!

Reflection: Are you giving your best to the Lord, even for simple tasks?

Prayer: Grant me O Lord the grace to do everything in the best way possible, all for your glory. Amen!

Working Full Time

Working Full Time
by Danny Tariman

“Obey your human masters in everything, not only when being watched, asĀ currying favor, but in simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord.” (Colossians 3:22)

It was a usual morning: routine 1-minute chat with staff as I go around the office, getting status of tasks assigned.

I noticed that one staff suddenly closed his mobile phone. From a distance, I can see him viewing the Facebook. His direct supervisor who was seated behind him, was not around. He quickly put his hands on his computer keyboard, sensing that I was about to go near to him.

Days before this moment, his supervisor reported to me that this staff does not work “full time”. He frequently checks his mobile device, usually doing something on Facebook. This has resulted to delays in completion of his tasks.

This reminds me of the Word of God: that as workers, we are supposed to “do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best.” (Col 3:22 MSG)

We need to give our best! This means ensuring that we give the best quality output or result, finished on schedule if not earlier. Let us make our customers — both internal and external customers — happy!

Let us glorify the Lord through our work, by working full-time in our given tasks, and by giving our best!

Reflection: Do you give all your time and effort to the task assigned to you? Even when your boss is not around?

Prayer: Forgive me Lord for not giving my best in my work. Grant me the grace I need to glorify You in my workplace. Amen!
